Philippa, returning by ship from Europe, finds her life unexpectedly changed by the woman who shares her cabin an entertainer whose career contrasts vividly with Philippas own existence. Written between 1974 and 2003, the novels represent a melding of history, feminism and lesbian romance. The first novel was published by the fledgling Naiad Press, which went on to become the largest and most successful lesbian/feminist publisher in the country. Marchant was Naiad president from its founding until 1995. In 1995, Marchant and Muriel Crawford, (her partner of more than half a century) withdrew from Naiad and founded A&M Books of Rehoboth Beach, DE. The last Sarah Aldridge book, O, Mistress Mine, was written and published when the author was 92 years young. BAKER, JEAN M
Family Secrets: Gay Sons - a Mother's Story (Do the Right Thing)
UK, The Harrington Park Press. 1998. (ISBN: 9781560239154). Paperback, a5 beige garage. Paperback in good condition apart from some small marks to page edges on one side. As a clinical psychologist, Jean Baker had always considered herself open-minded and tolerant, but found she wasn’t prepared for the revelation that her only two children were both gay. Family Secrets is an inspirational story of how she and her family learned to accept one another and overcome their internalized fears and prejudices as well as how they coped with a much greater challenge in their personal lives. Family Secrets is more than a parenting memoir, however. It is a guide that draws upon research and scientific findings to capsize the myths and stereotypes that contribute to societal homophobia. It offers important insight into the developmental needs of gay children, and it discusses the issues faced by gay and lesbian youth and their families. Offering practical suggestions about how parents and schools can help gay, lesbian, and bisexual children grow up to be productive, psychologically healthy adults, Family Secrets discusses the effects of social prejudice and stigma on the social and emotional development of sexual minorities. As long as homophobia is running rampant in American society, gay children are going to be reluctant or afraid to confide in their parents, and parents will have trouble understanding and accepting homosexuality in their children. To end the secrecy and build open and healthy environments for all children and adolescents, this book discusses: tactics for reducing homophobia in non-gay youths promoting tolerance and understanding of sexual minorities at home and in school the effects an AIDS death has on families "coming out" about HIV/AIDS discussing homosexuality with your children, regardless of whether or not they are gay or lesbian sexual orientation and the interaction of biology with experience Because Family Secrets is written from the viewpoint of a parent/psychologist, it offers insights into the developmental needs of gay and lesbian children in a way that no other book has done. School counselors, psychologists, marriage and family counselors, teachers, school administrators, and the parents and siblings of gays and lesbians will all benefit from reading this honest, helpful, and encouraging book. CLINE, SALLY
Radclyffe Hall: A Woman Called John (Hardcover)
John Murray. 1997. (ISBN: 9780719554087). Hardcover. She's best known as the author of The Well of Loneliness, "the one lesbian novel everyone has heard of", feminist scholar Sally Cline wittily remarks. But in her lifetime (1880-1943), Radclyffe Hall was a popular writer who deliberately courted controversy with her fifth novel, banned as obscene in 1928 after one of the 20th century's most notorious literary trials. Cline devotes valuable critical attention to Hall's other books, and to a flamboyant personal life (a virtual who's who of homosexual Britain) that was at odds with her political and religious conservatism. A biography of Radclyffe Hall, this work examines the life of the writer; her works, including "The Well of Loneliness", which was taken to trial and banned for obscenity; her religious beliefs; and her ideas on sexuality, including her tormented triangular relationships. JOHNSON, SUSAN E
Staying Power: Long Term Lesbian Couples
Garage A5 blue grey white text, Naiad Press. 1990. (ISBN: 9780941483759). Paperback, 8.5 x 5.5 x 0.7 inches. Paperback - 1990 - good condition - used books, secondhand books, out of print books, hard to find books, second-hand books, nonfiction, non-fiction books delivered world wide. This item is in stock. Perceiving a lack of role models for long-term lesbian relationships, Johnson presents a well-researched study of 108 couples who have been together for 10 to 52 years. Through illuminating profiles and commentary, she examines the meaning of commitment to these couples, which include a butch-femme pair in their 70s, and a former minister's wife and church organist who became lovers. Johnson examines the particular effect on lesbians of variables that bear on any long-term relationship--such as the relative importance of friendship and sex--but also issues of special concern to gay couples. How, for instance, do they formalize their union? Half of the couples in the survey exchanged rings, and purchasing a home was also a signal of commitment. Equality was considered of prime importance by most couples, and race and class differences presented more difficulties than did income disparities. The author provides excellent advice and insight, stressing that time, which allows problems to be resolved, is on the side of couples who try to stay together. Johnson is a sociologist specializing in women's and lesbian studies. Used: Acceptable.

SCOTT, JOAN WALLACH
Gender and the Politics of History (Gender and Culture Series)
black a5, Columbia University Press. 2000. (ISBN: 9780231118576). Paperback, 15 x 1.4 x 22.7 cm. Condition good clean. A couple of small lines of biro on two or three paragraphs. ref ZKVQ Winner, in the original edition, of the 1989 Joan Kelly Prize of the American Historical Association, this landmark work from a renowned feminist historian is a trenchant critique of women's history and gender inequality. Exploring topics ranging from language and gender to the politics of work and family, Gender and the Politics of History is a crucial interrogation of the uses of gender as a tool for cultural and historical analysis. The revised edition-in addition to providing a new generation of readers with access to a classic text in feminist theory and history-reassesses the book's fundamental topic: the category of gender. In provocatively arguing that gender no longer serves to destabilize our understanding of sexual difference, the new preface and new chapter open a critical dialogue with the original book.
